Debbie Robertshaw, Acupuncturist and Masseuse here at Thame Therapy Clinic explains how she combines the underlying energetic analysis of acupuncture to help her chose the best aromatherapy oils for you.

To many people Aromatherapy is associated with lovely smells that can be used in the bath or around the house, but it can be so much more.

When I trained, over 17 years ago,I learnt to use essential oils to help rebalance the body. This re-balancing is based on a diagnosis using Traditional Chinese Medicine, also used in Acupuncture treatment. This diagnosis looks at how your body responds to ailments, pain or stress and then uses a blend of essential oils combined specifically for you to help ease your symptoms. To create your specific blend questions such as whether you usually feel hot or cold, if there is pain whether it’s sharp and stabbing or a dull ache will be asked.Your responses then determine which essential oils will be used.

For example, with muscular pain a blend of essential oils can be either warming or cooling. If the pain is sharp and stabbing then oils such as Lavender, Chamomile and Clary Sage can be used to help cool the area and reduce inflammation. If the pain is a dull ache then essential oils such as Marjoram, Ginger and Juniper would be used to warm the area and again reduce any inflammation.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine there can be a number of causes for the same ailments, for example with Hayfever the causes can originate from too much moisture retained in the body or too much heat.Again the blend of essential oils would reflect your body’s specific needs in order to help ease symptoms.

The use of a blend of essential oils combined from a selection of over 50 along with a therapeutic massage can help to ease symptoms and promote a sense of well-being and relaxation that will help you to cope with the everyday stress and strain of life. I can also combine your aromatherapy treatment with acupuncture to enhance both forms of therapy.
