Jane Barker (BSc (Hons), MSc, MBPS, BACP-reg, UKCP-reg, SpLD (Dyslexia))

I am a fully qualified Integrative Psychodynamic Counsellor and Counselling Psychologist and Psychotherapist in Doctoral Training at the well-respected Metanoia Institute, London. I am registered with the BACP, UKCP and a member of the BPS (British Psychological Society) and abide by their codes of ethics to ensure safe working.

An ‘Integrative’ approach means I draw on different models and theories to help people, as I believe that there is no one type of therapy that fits all. I place the therapeutic relationship at the centre of the work so that we create a safe and trusted alliance and value being collaborative and transparent, talking openly about how we are working and reviewing as we go along.

My academic background is a BSc (Hons) Psychology (1st class) and MSc Applied Forensic Psychology. I have completed the clinical requirements of a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy and am now working on my research thesis exploring the development of self-compassion in women who have been sexually abused as children.

I have many years of professional experience working with a wide variety of clients with presenting concerns including trauma, depression, health concerns, anger management and anxiety. My research interest is the development of self-compassion in women who have experienced childhood sexual abuse.

As part of my training I have engaged in personal therapy myself so I understand how difficult it can be to both ask for help and face the prospect of change. In the first session, we would explore your problems, goals and expectations of therapy. If you would like to work together we can either contract for a set number of sessions, or some people prefer open therapy with no definitive end date.

I am also a fully qualified teacher of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy), holding regular classes and workshops in Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. I am proud to be a member of the UK Listing of Mindfulness Teachers which means that I have been able to demonstrate (via an assessment process) that I meet the UK Good Practice Guidance for Mindfulness-Based Teachers i.e. that I am: suitably trained, committed to continuous professional development, hold appropriate insurance and am receiving supervision for my teaching.
