WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?

by admin / 06 March 2017 / No Comments

Osteopathy consists of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions, for example:

  • Joint Pain including arthritic pain
  • Generalized aches and pains
  • Sciatica
  • Headaches arising from the neck
  • Neck and back pain
  • Muscle spasms
  • Sport injuries

The philosophy of Osteopathy is based on the idea that structure and function of the body are fundamentally linked. Osteopaths will work through the neuro-musculoskeletal system and work on muscles, ligaments and joints to enhance the blood and nerve supply to these structures. The aim of treatment is to focus on relieving pain, promoting tissue health and allowing the body to heal itself.

Often people will seek an osteopath for problems that have gradually come on over time and unsure what has caused it. Osteopaths aim to identify the cause of the problem rather than just treating your symptoms and looking at the body as a whole. When taking a case history time will be spent listening to a person’s lifestyle and social factors as well as a past history.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING A CONSULTATION?

The first part of the consultation includes a detailed case history, and will include questions about current and past complaints as well as general health and lifestyle.

The physical examination involves an assessment of posture, active and passive movements of the joints and muscles to see how your body moves. This assessment also ensures you are safe to treat.

Osteopaths use a range of techniques including soft tissue massage, joint articulation, stretching techniques and if suitable joint manipulation.

During the session a treatment plan will be discussed with you and advice on self care will be given such as stretching and strengthening exercises.

Our Osteopath, Ebony Jacklin, comments,

“I first found out about osteopathy, after being advised to seek an osteopath after suffering from sport related injuries. I saw the benefits first hand after attending a couple of treatment sessions. I found the holistic approach really interesting and wanted to learn more about the profession. I qualified as an osteopath, from The British School of Osteopathy with a Masters of Osteopathy. I am fully registered with the General Osteopathic Council and a member of the Institute of Osteopathy.  Since graduating I have enjoyed working with a wide range of patients.”
