Dr Jane Barker (DCPsych, CPsychol, HCPC Registered Counselling Psychologist)

I have a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology from the Metanoia Institute in London with a research interest in trauma and self-compassion. Part of the Doctorate also means that I am also a qualified Psychotherapist. The training at the Metanoia Institute is seen to be among the most demanding courses available and is highly respected in the field of counselling and psychotherapy. I also have a First-Class Honours degree in Psychology and a MSc in Applied Forensic Psychology with Merit from Leicester University.

I am a member of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and an HCPC registered Practitioner Psychologist.

There are a lot of different ways of working with people, which can be very confusing. My training was to use an ‘Integrative’ approach which means that I draw on different models and theories to help people, as I believe that there is no one type of therapy that fits all. I place the therapeutic relationship at the centre of the work so that we create a safe and trusted alliance and value being collaborative and transparent, talking openly about how we are working and reviewing as we go along.

I have many years of professional experience working with a wide variety of clients with presenting concerns including trauma, depression, health concerns, anger management and anxiety. I am proud to work for the NHS where I have experience working with people who have a diagnosis of BPD / EUPD and suicidal ideation. I currently run a service across Berkshire for people impacted by domestic abuse. My research interest for my Doctorate was an action research group around the barriers to developing self-compassion in women who had experienced childhood sexual abuse.

As part of my training, I have engaged in personal therapy myself so I understand how difficult it can be to both ask for help and face the prospect of change. In the first session, we would explore your problems, goals and expectations of therapy. If you would like to work with me, we can either contract for a set number of sessions, or some people prefer open therapy with no definitive end date.

I am also a fully qualified teacher of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy) and used to hold regular classes and workshops in Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.

Rates: £75.00 for one hour online. Should face to face be preferred, there would be an additional charge to cover the cost of the room (usually £10 / £12 an hour).
