Acupuncture

Why choose Acupuncture?

Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of problems whether they be physical, emotional, mental or spiritual in origin. The emphasis is on treating the root of the problem, looking at the person as a whole, and restoring balance to allow the body’s own healing potential to take place.

Acupuncture is wonderful for unlocking blocked energy. The feeling of being blocked may manifest in a number of ways, eg. frozen shoulder, recurring headaches, failing relationships, or an inability to plan for the future.

These are all examples of temporary states of disease but they can linger and become chronic. When health problems become chronic we can find ourselves in a vicious downward spiral where the mind and body have no real connection.

Acupuncture can make a real difference in these chronic conditions. The downward spiral of ill-health can be reversed to become an upward spiral of well-being. Patients who benefit from acupuncture usually report after a few treatments a sense of well-being even if their main problem persists. They know deep inside that they are on the path to recovery. There is also the potential to be well in ways never before experienced or imagined. It is possible with acupuncture to go beyond the removal of symptoms and begin to live a more fulfilling life.

Acupuncture does not force solutions on patients. It simply allows people to find their own healing path. This brings with it a feeling of being in control of one’s life and all the positive benefits that flow from a pro-active attitude to life.

What health problems does Acupuncture address?

The list of treatable symptoms is endless as acupuncture can offer insight and help on so many different levels. But to be more specific, acupuncture is more useful in the following situations:-

  • Where a condition has been present for 6 months or more and become chronic

  • Where medical drug treatment for chronic conditions has become limiting and possibly causing unacceptable side effects

  • Where no western medical diagnosis can be obtained

  • Where the cause of ill-health is mainly emotional or mental in origin

  • Where symptoms are extremely acute and require urgent mobilisation without manipulation

On the other hand, acupuncture is probably not appropriate where there are problems with bones and joints which require manipulation, or where there is an acute bacterial infection, or heavy bleeding requiring urgent medical attention.

How can Chinese Herbal Patents help?

Chinese herbal patents are a good complement for acupuncture since their use is based on a similar diagnosis to acupuncture. The herbal patents are used where a problem requires daily attention, particularly where the patient is experiencing strong physical symptoms which need something extra to breakdown their grip on the body.

Herbal patents are generally small round pills and so are also good for children of any age who may not be up to more invasive techniques. Herbal patents can be taken for short periods to aid treatment of acute symptoms (eg. to ward off the first signs of a cough or cold), or can be taken for years as a constitutional back-up.

How often will I need Treatment?

There are no set number of treatments as everyone has different rates of recovery. However, most patients commit themselves initially to 4 or 5 treatments on a weekly basis and then review progress. It is important to make this initial commitment as it usually opens the door to change.

Where acupuncture does make a tangible difference most patients opt to return on a monthly or seasonal basis in order to maintain their health.

Can I mix Acupuncture and Herbal Patents with medical drugs?

Acupuncture is regularly used safely alongside medical drugs either to assist the resolution of a problem and/or to help deal with the side effects of the drugs. In some cases it can be used alongside a lower intake of drugs with a view to eventually reducing the drugs to nil (eg. with anti-depressants).

The guidelines regarding the use of herbal patents are similar to acupuncture but more care needs to be taken to assess any possible interactions since herbal medicine has a more long lasting physical effect on the body.

Can Acupuncture be used alongside other Complementary Therapies?

Acupuncture can support the healing potential of many other therapies, and is used in this way with my other skills in herbal patents and zero balancing. It is particularly effective if used in acute musculo-skeletal problems in order to reduce inflammation before manipulation is used.

There is one area of potential conflict where acupuncture and homeopathy are used together. These two therapies generally don’t mix as they work on conflicting healing principles. It is usually better to use one or the other.
